Rachel Schumacher - Serve Here CT Fellow - Child and Family Agency of Southeastern Connecticut
Norwich native Rachel Schumacher’s path to become a Serve Here CT fellow began nearly a decade ago in early high school when she became passionate about community and service.

As a high school student, she taught Sunday school programs, read with elementary age kids and prepared meals for the homeless. During college, she spent part of her summer breaks rebuilding New Orleans after Katrina and immediately after college served with AmeriCorps for two years.

All of these experiences have helped prepare Schumacher for her current role as a Community Worker in intensive family preservation at the Child and Family Agency of Southeastern Connecticut in New London.

As a community worker for the home based program, Schumacher meets with families twice a week for four to six months to help the family make improvements so that the children can stay with their parents.

Although this kind of work is emotionally and mentally exhausting, Schumacher is passionate about making a difference in her community. Through Serve Here CT, Schumacher has a strong support network to empower her in work and passion.

“I think it’s really important to be involved where you are at. Connecticut is a part of who I am and I want to be a part of sustaining, building, and reviving my community from the inside out,” said Schumacher.
